History of Decision Making in Neonatal Intensive Care

In the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, Frank Placencia and Larry McCullough provide a simply superb review of "The History of Ethical Decision Making in the Neonatal Intensive Care."  It is remarkable to see the issues of 2012 framed in the vocabulary of the early 1970s.  For example, Richard McCormick's 1974 article contrasts "medical vitalism" (an "idolatry of life") with "medical pessimism" (allowing or even causing death when life is frustrating, burdensome, or "useless").
