After the Eluana Englaro case, I was alarmed to see this headline coming out of Italy: "Mayor of Italian Town Orders Residents Not to Die." (La Stampa)
In fact, since the start of the month it has been illegal to die in Falciano del Massico, a village of 3,700 people some 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Naples in southern Italy. The unusual order follows a dispute with a neighboring town, which has owned the old cemetery since local boundaries were redrawn in 1964. The two communities disagree about a planned expansion of the site, so Fava pulled out of the project and decided to build a new cemetery. But until the town gains the permits and builds the new cemetery, the townsfolk have been ordered to keep on living.
