In high profile end-of-life cases it is now common for interested parties to establish Facebook pages to raise money and awareness. One such page is devoted to "supporting Hassan Rasouli's fight to live with financial help and prayer."
I asked the operators of this site: “What are the reasons for continuing treatment? The motivation? Most families accept medical recommendations. Is it just doubt of prognostic accuracy? Is it because it is what Hassan would want? Is it because that is what is best for Hassan?”
Here is their response:
1. Reasons for continuing treatment: Hassan is improving each week and so there is hope for his recovery.
2. The motivation (for continuing treatment) is that Hassan is improving.
3. Yes, the family does doubt the accuracy of the medical recommendations. Hassan is improving and the doctors said that this would not happen. Officially, it seems that the doctors continue to ignore/deny his progress.
4. Does Hassan want this? Yes, he does. He is always eager to show us he understands us. He engages us with his facial expressions and with his actions. He is not giving up on life.
5. Is this best for Hassan? Yes, it is. He wants to live and his family wants him to live. When there is hope and actual evidence for hope, as there is for Hassan, medical intervention is not futile.
