Australasian Association of Bioethics & Health Law Conference 2012

Australasian Association of Bioethics & Health Law Conference
12-14 JULY 2012, VIADUCT EVENTS CENTRE

Invitation to Contribute
This conference will provide a forum for discussion of several core concerns within bioethics and health care law. Presentations of research addressing theoretical aspects of any of the three central concepts (‘harm, ‘health’ and ‘responsibility’) are welcomed, as are contributions that consider the application of these concepts in specific clinical, legal, social, and political contexts.

Although priority will be given to abstracts that broadly fit within the conference themes, all high quality abstracts will be considered. We welcome submitters from all disciplinary backgrounds, including students.

Contributions from the following areas of inquiry could fit within the themes of this conference (note that this list is intended as an indicator of relevance, and is not exhaustive):

Harm:
·        Rights and attributions of harm within bioethics and health law
·        Mill’s Harm Principle and its relevance to health, health care and health law and policy
·        Ethical and legal issues in patient safety
·        Harm, health and society: public health policy and/or practice
·        Allocating resources, harms and benefits

Health:
·        Conceptual analysis of ‘health’
·        Critical analysis of use of the concept within health law and policy documents

Responsibility:
·        Personal responsibility for health status – what is the responsibility of patients/individuals?
·        Open disclosure, complaints and healthcare quality; medical error and adverse events
·        Responsibility and new and emerging technologies (e.g. medical devices; enhancement technologies)
·         Responsibility in and for relationships (professional and/or personal, within the sphere of medicine and medical education)

Presentation Formats
The Program Committee invites you to submit abstracts for consideration as a Bioethics/Bio-Law Bites, Ethics Cafés, Workshops or Rapid Fire Posters for AABHL 2012. All abstracts will undergo a peer review process by the program committee. The Program Committee will allocate abstracts to the program taking into account the quality of each abstract and the balance of the program.

Bioethics/Bio-Law Bite
Bioethics/Bio-Law Bites will be allocated 10 minutes presentation time to highlight the main points, followed by 10 minutes discussion and question time.

Bioethics/Health Law Café
The “Ethics Café” has been adopted from the Philosophy Cafe concept but directed at a health-law and ethics audience.  Cafes aim to be both sociable and serious and provide an opportunity for beginning and experienced clinicians, health lawyers and ethicists to discuss with true collegiality some of the most challenging clinical cases that we treat.  They should be organised around a specific case/theme/policy/legislative development and will be allocated 90 minutes.

Workshops
Conference workshops will be allocated 90 minutes. Workshops are working sessions with defined objectives, such as defining the scope and nature of an issue, developing a plan of action, solving a problem, or demonstration of innovations with hands-on experience.

Submission
·    Abstracts must be no more than 300 words in length
·    Do NOT include symbols, tables, pictures or diagrams within the abstract.
·    Any abbreviations must be spelt out on first use.
The receipt of all abstracts will be confirmed by an acknowledging email. All applications will be considered by the AABHL 2012 Program Committee. All applicants will be notified of the success or otherwise of their application within plenty of time to register within the Early Bird Registration phase.
Please note that the space available for presentations is limited and preference will be given to papers of the highest quality as judged by the Program Committee. The AABHL conference attracts a large numbers of submissions and the Program Committee will look favourably on high quality abstracts.
