Kathryn Beattie - Scottish Court Hears Unilateral Withdrawal Case

At a fatal accident inquiry before the Scottish Sheriff Court, Jean Crawford broke down as she recalled how her daughter, 13-year-old leukaemia victim Kathryn Beattie, died following brain surgery on June 21, 2004.

Kathryn died alone at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital when her life support machine was turned off without her parents’ consent.  Jean begged medics to switch the machine back on after a consultant turned it off without her permission or that of her husband.  Jean told the court that she would have wanted to have a priest and her family there but that her daughter had “died alone.”  (Daily Record)
